The Seer of Seers: The First Official Groundhog Day
For our first year thesis show in the SVA MFA Design program we were assigned to individually choose a historical event and create souvenirs that memorialized it. Each student created 10 original souvenirs in multiples of 10 each, and our products were displayed in themed booths within a group exhibition.
My project was entitled “The Seer of Seers”, and it celebrated the First Official Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Souvenirs included a prognostication kit to channel the groundhog’s prediction powers, groundhog punch to encourage accurate seasonal predictions, Seer of Seers candles (an ode to Candlemas, the religious holiday from which Groundhog Day derived), and a Weather Mixing Kit so everyone can control the seasons.
